Ishmael Armarh Ghanaian, b. 1986

Born in 1986 in Accra, Ghana, Ishmael Armarh is an emerging contemporary artist whose work blends historical and mythological figures with a distinctly post-contemporary style. His textured surfaces evoke an eerie, forward-looking aesthetic, reflecting a new age of visual expression. Drawing inspiration from sci-fi narratives that resonate with today’s youth, Ishmael creates dynamic black figures set against vibrant backdrops and ornate textures, symbolizing his deep connection to his native culture.

A graduate of Ghanatta College of Art & Design in Accra, Ishmael has honed his craft from an early age, developing a unique artistic language. His work is characterized by bold colors, prominent brushstrokes, and royal-like accessories, which give his characters a powerful presence.

Ishmael gained international recognition when he was selected as a Visiting Fellow at the Noldor residency in 2021. He followed this with his first solo exhibition at Chilli Art Projects in London in 2022. Today, he continues to live and work in Ghana, building a successful career in contemporary art.
